Hybrids come in many shapes and sizes and their capabilities are every bit as varied.
The Outlander PHEV is a High-Range Series Parallel Hybrid, one of only a handful, and even though it’s the largest vehicle in its class it can travel farther than any other PHEV model.
An electric motor is always used to power the wheels. A traditional engine is used as a generator to extend the range by charging the battery that powers the electric motor.
While fine for short low speed journeys, Series hybrids often struggle to produce enough power to maintain high speeds or tackle steep inclines when in extended mode.

Series Parallel Hybrids provide the best balance of electric efficiency and long range practicality, able to power the wheels using either the traction battery or internal combustion engine.
Only a handful of these cars exist and the Outlander PHEV is both the largest and most efficient of them with an EV range of 33 miles.

Mid-range series parallel hybrids have an EV range of between 20-30 miles.

Principally powered by an internal combustion engine and lacking the ability to ‘plug-in’. The battery powered electric motor is primarily used for additional power and acceleration and is charged directly from the combustion engine.
The original hybrid power design, this is an ageing technology that is less efficient and typically only offers pure electric drive at speeds of up to 10mph. They have small batteries, so pure EV range is 2-3 miles at best.

Regenerative braking is an energy saving feature unique to hybrid vehicles where braking helps recharge the drive battery.
While most hybrids simply apply the regenerative braking automatically in the background, the Outlander PHEV integrates it fully into the driving experience. Shift-paddles behind the steering wheel allow the driver to fine tune the amount of regenerative braking on the fly in a way that an automatic system cannot, achieving better fuel efficiency and maximising EV charge potential.
A combination of the internal combustion engine and the twin electric motors make the Outlander PHEV the most capable 4x4 hybrid available. The two motors supply instant torque to all four wheels and the Outlander PHEV can even be driven in 4WD mode purely using electric power.
